Referral Letter

When writing a referral letter for someone, keep in mind that the letter you write can make the difference between acceptance and rejection for the person you are referring. If someone has requested that you write a referral letter for them, it is usually because they are attempting to be hired for a particular position. Therefore, it is important that you write an effective employment referral letter for this person.

Basically, a referral letter is quite similar to a recommendation letter. However, the recommendation letter will be sent to an employer that is known to you. In the case of a job referral letter, you are essentially introducing someone and vouching for his character, abilities and integrity.

It is actually an honor when someone asks you to write a referral letter. That means this person has confidence in you to say the right things that will facilitate hiring. However, you need to be sure that you are the best person to write a job referral letter. Be sure that you can write positive things about this person before agreeing to write the letter. If you do not feel that you can honestly say the best things about someone, it is better for you both if you decline. However, if you feel that you do qualify to write this letter, get together with the requestor and make sure that you cover the things he or she wants to be said.

Ask the requestor to provide you with a list of accomplishments, organizations of affiliations, or anything else that would be considered relevant. A good way to do this is to see a copy of the individual's resume. Just remember that you can only use what you know from personal experience in the referral letter. You would not want anything to come back to haunt you later.
